Progressives Congress (APC) has described its landslide victory in the recent local government elections as a strong endorsement of Governor Monday Okpebholo's administration and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking to journalists in Benin City, the state APC chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, said the party secured 2,158,600 votes, winning all 18 local government chairmanship seats and 192 councillorship positions across the state.
According to Tenebe, the outcome reflects the confidence Edo residents have in the APC-led administration and has strengthened the party's determination to deliver 2.5 million votes for President Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
He recalled that while the APC was in opposition during the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki, it continued to participate in local government elections despite difficult conditions.
Tenebe alleged that although the party won several councils at the time, its victories were overturned through the swearing-in of preferred candidates.
The APC chairman also criticised parties that boycotted the recent election, saying they lacked the moral authority to challenge the outcome. He maintained that voters freely gave the APC an overwhelming mandate in all 18 local government areas.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) presented Certificates of Return to the 18 elected local government chairmen at its headquarters in Benin City.
Presenting the certificates, EDSIEC Chairman Jonathan Aifubakhian urged the new council leaders to justify the confidence placed in them by providing responsible, transparent and people-centred governance.
Speaking on behalf of the elected chairmen, Eribo described the poll as the freest conducted by the commission, commending EDSIEC for organising what he called a credible election.
He said the turnout was impressive and comparable to that of a national election.
Eribo also urged Edo residents to continue supporting the APC and back President Tinubu in the 2027 general election, echoing the party's target of delivering 2.5 million votes for the president.
The APC's vote totals and its projection for the 2027 presidential election are claims made by party officials. Opposition parties and independent observers may offer different assessments of the election and its outcome.
