Etsako West Chairman-Elect Seeks Partnership With NIS To Boost Grassroots Sports
The Chairman-elect of Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, Hon. Romeo Alaoye Omoike, has pledged to prioritise grassroots sports development as part of his administration's agenda.
Omoike made the commitment during a courtesy visit to the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, in Abuja.
During the visit, the chairman-elect presented his Certificate of Return to Shaibu and congratulated him on his appointment, describing the former Edo State Deputy Governor as a mentor whose dedication to youth empowerment and sports development continues to inspire emerging leaders.
He said his administration would collaborate with the National Institute for Sports and other stakeholders to identify and nurture young talents through sports and other youth-focused initiatives.
According to Omoike, sustained investment in grassroots sports will help reduce crime, promote social inclusion and create opportunities for talented young athletes to realise their potential.
The chairman-elect also reaffirmed his loyalty to the leadership of the All Progressives Congress in Edo State, stressing that unity within the party would enhance governance and fast-track development in Etsako West.
Highlighting his administration's priorities, Omoike identified insecurity as a major concern and pledged to work with security agencies, local vigilante groups and community leaders to improve safety across the council area.
He further promised to tackle environmental challenges, improve infrastructure in primary schools and strengthen internally generated revenue to enable the council provide better infrastructure and social services.
The meeting ended with both leaders expressing confidence that closer collaboration between the National Institute for Sports and local government authorities would strengthen grassroots sports development and expand youth empowerment opportunities in Edo State.
Shaibu has consistently advocated the use of sports as a vehicle for youth development, talent discovery and economic empowerment, with the National Institute for Sports playing a leading role in training coaches, athletes and sports administrators across Nigeria.
