Majid Michel: Comparing Ghana’s Film Industry With Nollywood Is Unfair
Veteran Ghanaian actor Majid Michel has criticised comparisons between Ghana’s film industry and Nigeria’s Nollywood, describing them as unfair because of the vast difference in population size and industry development.
Speaking during an interview on Y1079 FM in Accra, Michel argued that Nigeria’s population gives it a natural advantage in producing more actors, filmmakers and movies.
“The comparison between us and Nigeria is such a stupid comparison to me,” he said, illustrating his point with an analogy of a person having 50 children and another having five.
Michel noted that Ghana has fewer than 40 million people, compared with Nigeria’s population of more than 200 million, arguing that the demographic gap makes direct comparisons between their film industries illogical.
The actor also cautioned against comparing developing African institutions with those of older, long-established foreign nations without considering differences in their histories, governance and development systems.
