Shendam Local Government Area In Plateau State Set To Increase NYSC Money To 150k
Shendam Local Government Area in Plateau State has introduced a special incentive package for NYSC medical professionals, offering doctors serving in the council ₦150,000 monthly allowance and free accommodation to tackle healthcare manpower shortages in rural communities.
Council Chairman, Dr. Nicholas Kemi Nshe, said nurses, pharmacists, medical laboratory scientists and other healthcare professionals posted to the area also receive ₦70,000 monthly.
“We give a doctor serving in Shendam free accommodation and pay them ₦150,000 as allowance from start to end. Nurses, pharmacists and laboratory technologists receive ₦70,000 monthly. This is to encourage more professionals to come to Shendam,” he said.
Nshe said the initiative is designed to attract and retain qualified healthcare workers while improving access to quality medical services for residents.
He disclosed that a recent two-day free medical outreach organised with the NYSC under its Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) provided free consultations, laboratory tests, medications and health education to more than 600 indigent residents.
The chairman also revealed that his administration is constructing and renovating primary healthcare centres across the council and building a modern medical laboratory to strengthen diagnostic services.
NYSC Plateau Coordinator, Jonathan Iliya Yavala, said the outreach attended to more than 400 residents by Saturday afternoon and was expected to reach between 600 and 700 beneficiaries.
“We exhausted our drugs and had to procure additional supplies,” he said, adding that the medical team screened and treated residents for malaria, hepatitis B and C, hypertension, diabetes and other common ailments.
