Fear and confusion erupted at the Uwelu Spare Parts Market after the Edo State Taskforce arrested two men accused of collecting illegal levies from traders and customers.
The operation followed several complaints that some individuals were allegedly issuing unauthorized tickets and demanding money from people doing legitimate business, despite the state government's ban on illegal revenue collection.
The suspects, identified as Tony Amayo and Thompson Okun, claimed they were working under the instruction of one Kingsley Ikhimwin, who allegedly assured them the revenue collection was legal and approved by the local government.
The Edo State Taskforce says investigations are ongoing and has warned that anyone involved in illegal taxation or extortion will face the full weight of the law.
