Watch As Sunderland Student With 'Impeccable Reputation' Is Caught In Paedophile Hunters' Sting
An international student with an “impeccable reputation” was caught in a sting while trying to meet a 14-year-old girl at a bus station after sexually grooming her online.
Nigerian national Anderson Ishiekwene had been in the UK for just a few months when he travelled to the Galleries shopping centre in Washington to see a schoolgirl he had been chatting to over the internet in January.
Newcastle Crown Court heard paedophile hunters Guardians of the North had been behind the fake child profile and were waiting for Ishiekwene when he arrived.
Ishiekwene, who entered the UK on a student visa last August, has now been jailed for three years and faces deportation.
Footage taken during the confrontation shows churchgoer Ishiekwene covering his eyes while members of the group ask why he has turned up to meet a child.
He is told to “stop resisting” and “behave” while informed he is the subject of a citizen's arrest.
Ishiekwene ends up being restrained on the floor before the police arrive and arrest him.
Twenty-five-year-old Ishiekwene, of Peacock Street West, Sunderland, admitted attempting to engage in sexual communication and was convicted of meeting a child following sexual grooming after a trial.
Judge Robert Spragg jailed him for three years, ordered him to sign the sex offenders’ register and abide by a sexual harm prevention order for 10 years and also warned him that he faces deportation.
The judge said this was a precursor to future meetings and Ishiewkwene expected sex to eventually take place with the child.
Prosecutor Cole Cockburn told the court Guardians of the North had set up a fake profile on Facebook, which Ishiekwene contacted on January 2 to say “Happy New Year”.
Mr Cockburn said: "This would be the first of many messsages exchanged. He asked her how she was doing and she said she was getting her schoolbag prepared.”
The court heard the conversations moved to Whatsapp and Ishiekwene was told on "numerous occasions" that he was speaking to a 14-year-old but went on to exchange 300 pages of messages with her.
Ishiekwene turned the conversation sexual and told the girl he wished he was with her “doing what lovers do”, sent her an explicit picture and asked for the same in return.
Arrangements were made to meet on January 10 and Ishiekwene said they could “kiss like lovers”.
Mr Cockburn said: “An arrangement was made to meet at the Galleries, in Washington, and he travelled there and he was confronted at the bus station by Guardians of the North.
“Police were contacted and he was taken into custody.”
Mark Savage, defending, said Ishiekwene had an “impeccable reputation" and the disgrace has tarnished him and his family.
Mr Savage added: "He knows he won't be able to pursue any studies. He knows at the end of his sentence he is likely to be deported and he has let himself down.”
The court heard how references described Ishiekwene as “respectful and obedient” and a hard working man who is full of remorse.
