2027 Elections: NDC Steps Up Campaign Preparations As APC Declares Tinubu’s Re-election A Done Deal
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has intensified preparations for the 2027 general elections with the inauguration of its national secretariat and Presidential Campaign Council, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will secure a second term.

The NDC's activities followed its Third National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, where the party also presented certificates of return to its candidates ahead of the elections.

At a dinner organised after the meeting, the party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, pledged to wage an uncompromising war against corruption and tackle insecurity, poverty, unemployment and the rising cost of living if elected president.

Obi promised that Nigerians would begin to experience measurable improvements in governance from the first day of an NDC administration, insisting that the country needed a fundamental change in leadership and public resource management.

He maintained that government should focus on addressing national challenges rather than blaming political opponents or previous administrations.

The NDC National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, challenged the party's candidates to see their nominations as a responsibility to the electorate, warning that the party would not tolerate unfulfilled campaign promises.

Also speaking at the unveiling of the party's new secretariat, its National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, described the facility as the NDC's "Noah's Ark", portraying it as a unifying centre ahead of the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, the APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) has vowed to mobilise Nigerians behind Tinubu's second-term ambition, expressing confidence in the president's chances of victory.

The Director-General of the council, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, stated this while speaking with journalists in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, where he joined Tinubu and other prominent Nigerians for the Muslim lesser pilgrimage, Umrah.

The former Zamfara State governor reaffirmed the campaign council's determination to secure widespread support for Tinubu, attributing its confidence to the president's faith in God, record of performance and the mobilisation capacity of the campaign organisation.

In a related development, the APC released a supplementary list of appointments into the Tinubu/2027 Presidential Campaign Council, expanding its leadership and membership across various directorates and mobilisation structures.

The party's National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the additional appointments covered advisers, security and intelligence officials, sectoral groups and operational units.

Among those appointed were former Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura and former Jigawa State governors Ali Sa'ad and Saminu Turaki, who were named advisers to the council's chairman.

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello was appointed Director of the Directorate of Contact and Mobilisation, while former Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai and former Inspector-General of Police Mike Okiro were named among members of the Directorate of Security and Intelligence.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, was also appointed Director of Air Transport Mobilisation.

However, the APC's preparations have been accompanied by internal political tension in Imo State following a Federal High Court judgment removing Governor Hope Uzodimma as the party's senatorial candidate for Imo West and recognising former governor Rochas Okorocha as the validly nominated candidate.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish Okorocha's name as the APC candidate for the 2027 senatorial election.

Reacting to the judgment, Okorocha welcomed the ruling, declaring that justice had finally been served. He also commended the judiciary for resolving disputes arising from party nominations.

However, the Imo State chapter of the APC rejected the ruling's implications, insisting that Uzodimma remained its candidate, having secured the nomination through the support of the majority of party members who participated in the primary election.

In another development, the House of Representatives has summoned INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, to brief its Committee on Electoral Matters on the commission's preparedness for the 2027 general elections.

The lawmakers directed Amupitan to appear within seven legislative days and provide a comprehensive update on the Continuous Voter Registration exercise, Permanent Voter Card production and distribution, election technology, logistics, personnel training and electoral security.

He is also expected to provide details of budgetary allocations, funds released, outstanding financial commitments and possible implications of funding gaps for election preparations.

The resolution followed the adoption of an amended motion sponsored by the Minority Whip, Hon. Mansur Manu Soro, and Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Abdussamad Dasuki.

Presenting the motion, Soro warned that delays in addressing operational challenges relating to voter registration, logistics, technology and funding could undermine public confidence in the electoral process and threaten the peaceful conduct of the 2027 elections.
