ADC Attacks Yari Over Claim APC Will Rule Beyond 2031
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed the claim by former Zamfara State governor, Senator Abdul’Aziz Yari, that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will win the 2027 presidential election and that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will remain in power beyond 2031.
ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, described Yari’s prediction as “wishful thinking,” arguing that it does not reflect the current political realities in Nigeria.
Yari, who was recently unveiled as Director-General of Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign, had expressed confidence that the president would secure a second term and that the APC would retain power beyond Tinubu’s tenure.
He made the remarks on Sunday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, a day after his appointment was announced.
The campaign council is chaired by President Tinubu, while Vice-President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda serve as vice chairmen. Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma is the secretary.
Reacting through his media aide, Kola Ologbondiyan, Mark said the APC had yet to present a convincing message to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 election.
“Senator Yari’s assertion is wishful thinking which is completely at variance with the reality in our country,” Mark said.
“Foremost, his party, the APC, and its president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, have no message to present to Nigerian voters. How can he fathom a win in an election where they can’t communicate with the people?”
Also reacting, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, accused Yari of giving President Tinubu assurances that did not reflect the political situation in the country.
Abdullahi suggested that Yari’s prediction was influenced by his recent appointment as the president’s campaign director-general.
“He’s one of those lying to President Tinubu. We understand he needs to justify his new appointment,” he said.
The ADC spokesman also recalled how the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), during its years in power, once claimed it would govern Nigeria for 80 years, only to lose power at the polls in 2015.
Abdullahi questioned whether the APC currently possessed the political strength that the PDP had at the height of its dominance.
“At least, the PDP was a real political party, not this SPV,” he said.
He urged political actors not to take the outcome of the 2027 election for granted, stressing that past claims of political dominance had not always translated into electoral victories.
