Alonso Takes Responsibility As Chelsea Suffer 2-0 Defeat To Tottenham
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has admitted his team fell short of expectations after suffering a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
The Blues created several scoring opportunities but were denied repeatedly by Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinský.
Chelsea’s hopes of securing a positive result suffered a major blow in the second half when goalkeeper Mike Penders scored an own goal to give Spurs the lead. Cole Palmer was subsequently sent off after receiving a second yellow card, leaving the hosts with an uphill task.
Mathys Tel sealed Tottenham’s victory with a late second goal.
Reflecting on the defeat, Alonso accepted collective responsibility, insisting Chelsea must improve after a performance that fell below the standard set in recent victories over Bournemouth and Everton.
“We all take the blame for the result and for the performance,” the Spaniard said. “Today we were not at our best.”
Alonso noted that the contest had remained evenly balanced before Chelsea conceded, but the goal and subsequent red card swung the match decisively in Tottenham’s favour.
“In the second half, it was tight, with some half-chances for them and half-chances for us. It was about taking a moment, and once we conceded the first goal, it conceded everything,” he added.
“Then, when we wanted to have a reaction, we got the red card. Then it went the other way.”
The Chelsea boss urged his players to learn from the setback, acknowledging that their overall performance requires significant improvement.
“We can do better. It’s one to reflect on after this big game against a good opponent. And as for the performance, it’s one we must improve,” Alonso said.
