Edo ALGON Chairman Sunny Ekpeson To Lead Grand Opening of Edo Christian Football League, Youth and Faith-Based Sporting Initiative
The stage is set for a memorable celebration of faith, sportsmanship and youth empowerment as the Edo Christian Football League officially opens on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, in what is expected to be one of the state's biggest faith-based sporting gatherings.
The grand opening ceremony is being organised by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Executive Governor of Edo State on Youth Mobilization and Strategy, in collaboration with the Special Adviser on Religious Matters and Chaplain of Government House and the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN).
The event, which will commence at 12:00 noon, will be held under the leadership of the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Edo State Chapter, and Executive Chairman of Etsako East Local Government Council, Rt. Hon. Sunny Ekpetika Ekpeson, whose support for youth development and grassroots sports continues to receive widespread commendation.
The Edo Christian Football League is designed to bring together Christian youths from across the state through football while promoting unity, discipline, friendship, healthy competition and moral values. Beyond the excitement on the pitch, the initiative seeks to strengthen relationships among young people, encourage positive engagement and foster peaceful coexistence across communities.
The opening ceremony is expected to attract government officials, religious leaders, youth organisations, sports enthusiasts, football clubs and supporters from different parts of Edo State, creating an atmosphere of celebration and shared purpose.
Members of the public have been warmly invited to attend the historic event and witness the beginning of what promises to become a major annual sporting competition that will inspire the next generation of leaders, athletes and responsible citizens through the unifying power of football.
