Edo Assembly Moves Against Scavenger-Linked Vandalism, Orders Security Crackdown

The Edo State House of Assembly has directed security agencies to clamp down on illegal scavengers, popularly known as "Iron Condemn," over rising cases of vandalism and security threats across the state.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by the Majority Leader, Hon. Jonathan Aigbokhan Ibhamawu, during Monday's plenary.

Hon. Ibhamawu alleged that scavengers have been stripping homes, abandoned buildings and public facilities of iron materials and other valuables. He recounted how vandals attacked his property on Ekenwan Road, destroying the gate, removing roofing sheets and making away with valuable items.
He also raised security concerns, claiming that some scavengers were recently caught attempting to kidnap a child allegedly hidden under refuse in their cart.

Lawmakers, including Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Maria Edeko and other members, unanimously backed the motion, calling for the arrest and prosecution of those involved in vandalism and urging residents to report suspicious activities.

Speaker Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku directed all security agencies to take decisive action against illegal scavengers and ensure those found culpable are apprehended.
