Elon Musk Predicts AI, Robots Will Make Humans Run Out Of Jobs, Says Governments May Simply Pay People
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has predicted that rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and humanoid robots could eventually create a future where humans no longer need to work because machines will be capable of producing nearly everything society requires.
Speaking during a conversation with XPRIZE founder Peter Diamandis at the Abundance Summit, Musk said AI and robotics would become so productive that they could generate an abundance of goods and services far beyond human demand.
According to him, the biggest challenge in the future may not simply be unemployment, but the lack of meaningful work for people as machines take over most productive tasks.
"AI and robots are going to make so much stuff and provide so many services that they will actually run out of things to do for humans," Musk said. "There's only so much that humans can even express that they want."
He explained that if AI-driven technology expands global economic output by hundreds or even thousands of times, production could far exceed consumption, fundamentally changing the structure of the economy.
Musk also suggested that governments may eventually replace the concept of a universal basic income with what he described as a "universal high income," where citizens receive financial support because automated systems generate most of the world's wealth.
"I do think we'll have universal high income. We're basically just issuing money to people," he said.
Addressing concerns that such a system could trigger inflation, Musk argued that prices might instead decline if the supply of goods and services grows much faster than the money supply, making products increasingly affordable despite widespread government payments.
His comments add to the ongoing global debate about the long-term impact of AI and automation on jobs, economic inequality and the future of work, as governments and businesses grapple with the rapid pace of technological advancement.
