Kane Ends England’s 25-Year Ballon d’Or Drought In Historic Triumph
Harry Kane has made history after winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first Englishman in 25 years to claim football’s most prestigious individual honour.
The Bayern Munich striker received the award from Brazilian legend Ronaldo at a ceremony in London, sparking wild celebrations as fans chanted his name following the announcement.
Kane’s triumph ends England’s long wait for a winner of the men’s award since former Liverpool midfielder Michael Owen claimed the prize in 2001.
The 33-year-old England captain was visibly emotional as he accepted the trophy, describing the occasion as particularly special because the ceremony was held in his home country.
“Wow, wow, wow. I’m almost speechless. Being here in London makes it extra special. Thank you to everyone who voted for me,” Kane said.
He credited his team-mates for their contributions to his success and praised Bayern Munich for helping him develop both as a player and as a person.
“Without my team-mates it wouldn’t be possible,” he said, while wishing Bayern coach Vincent Kompany well.
Kane also paid tribute to his England colleagues, describing the past year as memorable despite its imperfections.
“We had a special year, it wasn’t perfect, but we had a lot of great moments. It was truly an honour to captain you. This is for all of us,” he said.
The historic victory represents a major milestone in Kane’s career, further cementing his place among football’s elite and ending England’s 25-year wait for the coveted individual prize.
