NIMC Arrests Illegal NIN Operators, Seizes Enrolment Equipment
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has arrested several suspected illegal National Identification Number (NIN) operators and confiscated equipment allegedly used for unauthorised enrolment and modification of personal data.
The arrests followed an enforcement operation conducted by the Commission’s Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit (ICEU) in Gwagwalada and other locations.
NIMC disclosed this in a statement, explaining that the operation was part of intensified efforts to combat illegal enrolment, extortion and other unethical practices capable of undermining the integrity and security of Nigeria’s National Identity Management System.
The Commission warned that many challenges experienced by NIN holders stemmed from attempts to bypass approved enrolment procedures.
It emphasised that NIN registration must be carried out exclusively at authorised centres, while requests for personal data modification should be processed through its official self-service modification platform.
NIMC also encouraged Nigerians to download the NINAuth application from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store to access security features, print their NIN slips and enjoy other services.
The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reaffirmed the Commission’s zero-tolerance policy towards extortion and unethical conduct.
She assured Nigerians and legal residents that the Commission remained committed to providing seamless and efficient NIN enrolment services.
NIMC urged members of the public to avoid unauthorised operators and use only approved channels for enrolment and other identity-related services.
It advised Nigerians to visit www.nimc.gov.ng or its verified social media platforms for accurate information.
