NPFL Warns Clubs: Functional Websites Now Key To Licensing
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has warned that clubs without functional websites could lose their operating licences as part of efforts to improve professionalism and attract more commercial investment.

Speaking during the NPFL/Afrinvest seminar for club media, marketing and communications officers in Enugu, the league's Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, said every club must establish and maintain an active website that provides credible and verifiable information.

According to Owumi, the lack of reliable digital platforms across many NPFL clubs has become a major obstacle to securing sponsorship deals, resulting in the loss of millions of naira in potential revenue for both the league and participating clubs.

He stressed that compliance with the directive would become a key requirement for club licensing, warning that clubs that fail to create and maintain functional websites risk being denied licences or having existing licences withdrawn.

Owumi also called on club administrators to invest more in their media departments, describing them as the public face of every football club.

He noted that without adequate funding, training and manpower, media units cannot effectively promote their clubs or engage supporters and sponsors.

He recommended that professionally run media departments should include specialists such as a media director, news editor, social media manager, content creator, photographer, graphic designer and videographer.

The NPFL chief further criticised the practice in many clubs where a single individual is responsible for photography, interviews, report writing, social media updates, video production and graphic design, describing the arrangement as unprofessional and counterproductive.

The new measures form part of the league's broader drive to improve professional standards, strengthen club branding and enhance the commercial appeal of the NPFL.
