NUJ Seeks Protection For Journalists Ahead Of Osun Governorship Election
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on security agencies and political stakeholders to ensure the safety of journalists covering the forthcoming Osun State governorship election amid rising political tensions.

In a communiqué issued after its monthly congress, the Osun State Council of the NUJ condemned the growing incidents of political violence ahead of the poll.

The statement was jointly signed by the council's Secretary, Comrade Lekan Akindoju, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Comrade Abisola Ariwodola, and another official.

The union urged security agencies, particularly the police, to remain impartial before, during, and after the election, stressing that neutrality would help strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.

The NUJ also appealed to law enforcement agencies to provide adequate protection for journalists carrying out their constitutional duty of reporting the election without intimidation or harassment.

Furthermore, the union called on political parties and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully, reminding them that elections should not be treated as a do-or-die contest.

It urged politicians to abide by the rules and ensure their supporters refrain from acts of violence capable of undermining the credibility of the electoral process.
