Okpebholo Splashes N50m On Edo Queens After WAFU-B Championship Triumph
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has rewarded Edo Queens with N50 million following the club’s impressive triumph in the 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League.
The governor announced the cash reward on Tuesday during the presentation of the 2025/26 Nigeria Women’s Football League and 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League trophies to the team at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City.
Edo Queens secured the regional title after battling Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies to a 2-2 draw after regulation time before emerging 4-1 winners in the penalty shootout.
Okpebholo praised the players for their resilience, determination and fighting spirit throughout the competition, describing their achievement as a significant moment for Edo State and Nigeria.
The governor said he was confident Edo Queens would prevail in the shootout after observing the composure of their goalkeeper, whose saves proved decisive in securing the victory.
He also applauded the coaching staff, technical crew and other officials for their roles in guiding the team to success.
“For me, this trophy matters to Edo people and the country. I must commend the players for their doggedness. I also want to thank the coaching crew and other officials.
“I want to reward the team with the sum of N50 million,” Okpebholo said.
Earlier, Edo State Sports Commission Chairman, Amadin Enabulele, hailed the team for making history by winning both the Nigeria Women’s Football League and WAFU-B championship in the same season.
Enabulele said the feat reflected the players’ grit, unity, discipline and resilience, while also praising the club’s new management for maintaining and improving the team’s standards.
He further commended the coaches, technical crew and management for their sacrifices and commitment to the success of Edo Queens.
