Osun 2026: Adeleke Declared Winner, Secures Second Term
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the incumbent Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, winner of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
The Returning Officer, Prof. Joshua Olalekan Ogunwale, announced the result at the INEC headquarters in Osogbo on Sunday.
Adeleke, candidate of the Accord Party, polled 511,067 votes to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who secured 444,815 votes.
The African Democratic Party (ADP) candidate, Dr Najeem Salaam, finished third with 17,180 votes.
According to INEC, the election had 2,339,544 registered voters, with 1,010,684 accredited voters. A total of 1,005,800 ballots were cast, comprising 985,097 valid votes and 20,721 rejected votes.
Declaring the result, Ogunwale said Adeleke secured the highest number of votes and satisfied the constitutional requirement of obtaining a two-thirds majority in two-thirds of the state's 30 local government areas.
“I hereby declare the candidate of the Accord Party, Ademola Jackson Adeleke, the winner of the election, having satisfied the requirements,” the returning officer said.
The declaration sparked jubilation across Osogbo, with Adeleke's supporters taking to the streets to celebrate the governor's victory and his return for another term.
Some residents attributed the outcome to the governor's performance, particularly his administration's attention to workers' welfare.
A civil servant, Odunola Omojola, said the backing Adeleke received from workers contributed significantly to his victory.
Another resident, Taiwo Oloyede, commended INEC for conducting what he described as a credible election and praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for allowing the electoral commission to operate independently.
With the result, Adeleke will continue as governor of Osun State for a second term.
