Political Parties Rush To Beat INEC Deadline For Candidates' Submission
Political parties across Nigeria are making final efforts to submit the names and personal details of their presidential and National Assembly candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the July 11 deadline.

Under the revised electoral timetable, parties have until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, to complete the online submission of candidates for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections through INEC's Candidate Nomination Portal.

According to the Electoral Act 2026, political parties are required to submit the names and personal particulars of nominated candidates at least 120 days before the election. INEC has scheduled the publication of the personal details of presidential and National Assembly candidates for August 1.

The commission also announced that nominations for governorship and State House of Assembly candidates will be uploaded between July 18 and August 8, while their particulars will be published on August 29.

Candidates Monitor Submission Process

Reports indicate that many candidates have travelled to their parties' national headquarters to personally supervise the submission of their documents amid fears that their names could be replaced before the deadline.

Some National Assembly candidates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) were seen at the party's Abuja secretariat to ensure their details were uploaded directly.

ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, expressed confidence that the party would meet the deadline, saying preparations were progressing smoothly.

INEC Warns Against Irregular Submissions

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said the commission would only accept candidates whose names match the results from party primaries monitored by INEC.

He explained that although political parties have the legal right to substitute candidates under specific conditions provided by law, all submissions must comply with the Electoral Act and party constitutions.

Haruna also confirmed that all 21 registered political parties had received access codes to upload candidates' information through the commission's online portal.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, earlier warned that the nomination portal would automatically close once the submission deadline expires.

LP, PDP Report Significant Progress

The Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) both said they were on track to complete the submission process before the deadline.

LP National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, disclosed that the party had already uploaded more than 90 percent of its candidates and expected to complete the exercise on schedule.

Similarly, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, said the party had achieved full compliance in submitting its presidential and National Assembly candidates. He dismissed allegations of candidate substitution, insisting that the PDP had conducted a transparent process.

The party also confirmed that uploads for governorship and State Assembly candidates had commenced.

APC Keeps Compilation Process Private

Within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), senior party officials directly involved in compiling the final list of candidates reportedly relocated from the party's national headquarters to avoid pressure from aggrieved aspirants.

APC Publicity Director, Bala Ibrahim, said the process was still ongoing but noted that the party's ICT department was handling the final compilation of candidates.

NDC Continues Submission Despite Court Case

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) also expressed confidence that it would complete the submission of its candidates before the deadline despite an ongoing legal challenge over its status.

The party said it was able to continue using INEC's nomination portal after filing an appeal and seeking a stay of execution against a Federal High Court judgment ordering its deregistration.

According to the NDC, it remains legally recognised pending the outcome of the appeal and has continued uploading the names of its presidential, vice-presidential and other candidates.

With the submission deadline only hours away, political parties are racing to complete the nomination process as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
