Pope Leo Speaks After Lung Cancer Surgery, Thanks Faithful For Prayers
Pope Leo XIV has issued his first message since undergoing surgery for lung cancer in Rome, thanking Catholics for their prayers and support as he recovers.

The pontiff expressed gratitude in a statement on Wednesday to Catholics attending a symposium marking the 10th anniversary of Amoris Laetitia, a document on marriage and family life written by his predecessor, Pope Francis.

“As you know, I have been unable to be among you during these days,” Leo said.

“I thank you warmly for your prayers and for the work you have done together. Your sharing of experiences and attentive listening are indeed a gift to the whole Church.

“I ask you, please, to pray for me, as I pray for you.”

Medical personnel said the pope had been diagnosed with pulmonary adenocarcinoma, a common form of lung cancer, during a 90-minute surgical procedure in Rome. Doctors reportedly removed the lower lobe of one of his lungs.

According to his medical team, Dr Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora, the pope’s recovery was progressing as expected. He had also begun walking around his hospital quarters.

The Vatican spokesperson added that Leo celebrated Mass alongside other priests in a room specially prepared on his hospital floor.

The pope had disclosed plans for the surgery during a speech to worshippers at St Peter’s Square over the weekend, revealing that the growth on his lung had been detected at an early stage.

Although Leo is not known to be a smoker and has maintained a healthy lifestyle, cancer has affected his immediate family. His older brother, Louis Prevost, is reportedly receiving cancer treatment, while their parents died of the disease in the 1990s.

The pontiff has cancelled all public engagements until October 20 to focus on his treatment and recovery. However, he is expected to undertake a lengthy trip to South America next month.
