Record-Breaking Nworgu Wins Nigeria’s First Gold At Glasgow 2026
Nigeria's Esther Nworgu claimed the country's first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after a record-breaking performance in the women's para powerlifting lightweight event.
The 24-year-old lifted 123kg to secure the gold with 119 points, having earlier broken the Commonwealth Games record with a successful 118kg lift worth 114.1 points. She then surpassed her own mark less than 10 minutes later with her winning lift, sealing the title in dominant fashion.
In recognition of her achievement, the National Sports Commission (NSC) rewarded Nworgu with $10,000 under its enhanced athlete incentive programme. She received $5,000 immediately at the competition venue, while another $5,000 was transferred directly to her account.
