Remi Tinubu Urges Entertainers To Support The Poor Through Charity
Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has renewed her appeal to successful entertainers to establish charitable foundations that will support vulnerable Nigerians, saying wealth should also be used to uplift others.

Speaking on Saturday, she reaffirmed her commitment to the Renewed Hope Initiative's grassroots empowerment programme and encouraged celebrities to emulate international artists known for their philanthropic efforts.

She specifically mentioned music stars such as Burna Boy, Asake and Davido, urging them to create foundations that would provide assistance to the less privileged.

According to the First Lady, owning luxury vehicles is not a problem, but successful individuals should also invest in improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

She noted that her empowerment scheme targets small-scale traders, including pepper, vegetable, okra and melon sellers, as well as akara and kuli-kuli vendors, stressing that they deserve support to expand their businesses.

Tinubu explained that government alone cannot meet the needs of every citizen, making private contributions essential to reducing hardship at the grassroots.

To illustrate the impact of such support, she recounted the story of a graduate in Abuja who turned to selling akara after struggling to secure employment. She said assistance was quietly provided to help him grow his business, which has since expanded to employ 12 people.

The First Lady's remarks come weeks after comments about akara sellers attracted public attention, with President Bola Tinubu jokingly referring to her as "Iya Alakara" during the Presidential Press Corps Dinner in Abuja.

She also recently distributed N50,000 grants to 2,000 petty traders in Jigawa State, maintaining that public criticism would not discourage her from continuing the empowerment initiative.
