Simeone Delivers Honest Lookman Verdict Ahead Of Atletico Madrid’s Man United Clash
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has admitted that Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman is yet to reach his best form this season but insists he retains faith in the Nigerian international.
Lookman has endured a frustrating start to the campaign after making an impressive impact following his €35 million move from Atalanta in January.
The 28-year-old registered nine goals and four assists in 24 appearances during his first spell with Los Rojiblancos, raising expectations that he would become even more influential after completing a full pre-season with the Spanish side.
However, the Nigerian has managed just one goal in nine appearances this season, with his performances falling short of expectations.
His struggles have also affected his position in the team, with Alex Baena reportedly receiving more opportunities in Atletico’s attack.
Speaking ahead of Atletico’s UEFA Champions League clash with Manchester United, Simeone acknowledged Lookman’s difficulties but praised his work ethic and expressed confidence in his ability to rediscover his form.
“Ademola isn’t at the level he wants or we want, but he works hard every day. He’s a dribbler, and he needs to lose the ball sometimes. I believe in him,” Simeone said.
Lookman started Atletico’s previous match against Alaves but was substituted after 47 minutes in what was described as a tactical decision rather than a fitness-related change.
The Super Eagles star will now hope to convince Simeone of his readiness for the encounter with Manchester United, with a strong performance potentially providing the spark needed to revive his season.
Despite his recent struggles, the Nigerian’s ability to beat defenders and create attacking opportunities remains an important asset for Atletico as they prepare for the European contest.
