Tinubu: Opponents Afraid Of Their Own Shadows
President Bola Tinubu has defended the neutrality of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria called for credible elections and a level playing field ahead of the 2027 general election.
The delegation, led by Most Rev. Matthew Ndagoso, urged adequate funding for INEC and election outcomes that truly reflect the will of the people.
Responding, Tinubu maintained that INEC has "never intimidated anybody," adding that political opponents are "afraid of their own shadows."
The meeting also covered the economy, security, education and religious freedom. The President said his administration inherited significant challenges but has stabilised the economy and is steering the country towards prosperity. The bishops also renewed calls for the return of mission schools and equal treatment for all worshippers.
