Tinubu Urges Diaspora Doctors to Return, Help Transform Nigeria
President Bola Tinubu has appealed to Nigerian healthcare professionals living abroad to return home and contribute to strengthening the country's health sector, describing their expertise as vital to Nigeria's development.
Speaking on Friday while receiving a delegation of Nigerian medical professionals from the diaspora at the State House, Abuja, Tinubu reflected on his own decision to return to Nigeria after working abroad, saying it required commitment and resilience.
He acknowledged that many Nigerians abroad had experienced better opportunities overseas but urged them to help build a stronger nation by bringing their skills back home.
The President also encouraged the visiting professionals to persuade other Nigerian doctors in the diaspora to return and support national development.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration's commitment to improving healthcare, reducing poverty, expanding educational opportunities and delivering prosperity through the Renewed Hope agenda. He stressed that the contributions of diaspora professionals would help lay a solid foundation for future generations.
On Nigeria's democratic journey, the President noted that the country's democracy is still developing compared to older democracies such as those of the United States and the United Kingdom.
He urged Nigerians to remain determined and focused on strengthening democratic institutions.
Tinubu also cited the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, as an example of the power of unity and diversity.
He expressed hope that Nigeria would one day host a similar global celebration.
The President directed Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) Director-General Abike Dabiri-Erewa to prepare personalised letters of appreciation for members of the visiting delegation, while his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, will coordinate the exercise.
He further commended the Minister of State for Health, Dr Iziaq Salako, and other health officials for advancing reforms in the healthcare sector.
The delegation's visit coincided with the 2026 National Diaspora Day Celebration, held from July 24 to 25 at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja under the theme: "Harnessing Global Diaspora Medical Expertise to Strengthen Local Health Systems for National Development."
