Amusan Arrives Team Nigeria Camp Ahead Of Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games
Nigeria's quest for a successful outing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games has received a major lift with the arrival of world 100m hurdles record holder Tobi Amusan at Team Nigeria's training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Amusan, one of the country's top medal hopefuls, joined the national contingent for the final phase of preparations ahead of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, which begin in six days.

Her arrival came as the National Sports Commission (NSC) unveiled an enhanced welfare and incentive package aimed at boosting athletes' performance and ensuring adequate support throughout the competition.

According to the Commission, the initiative underscores the Federal Government's renewed commitment to athlete welfare, elite performance and the promotion of sporting excellence.

Under the package approved by NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade, every athlete and official received ₦250,000 to cover transportation to the national camp in Abuja. An additional ₦250,000 has also been approved for return travel after the Games.

The Commission also announced an upward review of local camping allowances, with athletes now receiving ₦5,000 daily, compared to the previous ₦1,000 to ₦2,000, while officials will earn ₦7,500 per day. It noted that the payments had already been made.

The welfare package extends to the 21-day high-performance training camp in Aberdeen, where athletes are training with world-class facilities ahead of the Games.

Athletes at the overseas camp are receiving a daily allowance of $150, while coaches receive $200. The NSC said most of the payments had been completed, with only a few outstanding cases delayed by banking issues.

Competition allowances have also been increased, with athletes set to receive $200 per day during the Games and coaches earning $250 daily, an improvement on the allowances paid at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Beyond the financial incentives, Team Nigeria has been provided with upgraded PUMA competition kits, including about 20 items, premium luggage and two durable travel boxes for each athlete.

The Federal Government has equally approved an enhanced medal reward package. Gold medallists will receive an instant cash reward of $3,000, silver medallists $2,000 and bronze medallists $1,000, while coaches of medal-winning athletes will receive matching rewards.

In addition, medal winners will receive separate performance bonuses of $5,000 for gold, $3,000 for silver and $2,000 for bronze, to be paid directly into their bank accounts.

The Commission further disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to host Team Nigeria's medallists after the Games in recognition of their achievements.

With Amusan now settled in camp and athletes buoyed by the improved welfare package, Team Nigeria will be aiming to convert its preparations into podium finishes when the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games get underway next week.
