Celebrations erupted across Okpe Kingdom in the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State as sons, daughters, and numerous visitors gathered to celebrate the annual New Yam Festival.

This event stands as one of the most prominent cultural festivals marking the beginning of a new year for the Okpe people. The colourful event brought together traditional rulers, elders, women, youths, and distinguished guests, who united to celebrate their rich traditions, foster unity, and give thanks for another successful farming season.

Speaking during the celebration, HRH Oba Idogu III, OON, JP, the Olokpe of Okpe Kingdom, explained that the New Yam Festival is far more than an ordinary celebration. According to the monarch, the festival officially marks the start of the Okpe New Year—a time when the people express gratitude to God for a bountiful harvest and pray for greater blessings in the months ahead.

The royal father also showered prayers upon the kingdom, asking God to bless every family with good health, peace, prosperity, a bumper harvest, and increased opportunities throughout the new year.

Featuring traditional music, cultural dances, vibrant displays, and joyful celebrations, this year's New Yam Festival once again demonstrated why Okpe Kingdom remains one of the communities proudly preserving the rich cultural heritage of Akoko-Edo and Edo State.
